Tree Transplanting can be done in the spring or fall, but the best time of year is the winter. During the winter, conditions for moving and planting large trees are optimum - the tree is dormant and the ground is hard, making it easy to move large equipment without damaging lawns.

Pinehurst has several tree spades in 6 different sizes, allowing us to move a 7-8" caliper tree. (The caliper of a tree is the diameter of the trunk) With the proper equipment, moving large trees is simple:

1. First, our tree experts dig a hole, known as a plug, at the planting site with the tree spade.

2. Next, the tree is dug from our nursery. All branches are secured and the root ball is covered to prevent any damage during the transplant.
3. The tree is then moved to the planting site.
4. Once at the site, it is unwrapped, lowered into the plug and the blades of the spade are removed.
